I often think about you. I close my eyes and see your spacious skies, your amber waves of grain, the purple mountains above the fruited plain. I hear your children giggling as they run barefoot through yellow, grassy fields–ones that are clean and pure, untouched by man’s poisons. I see the children’s red, rosy cheeks, the glimmer in their eyes, the bright blue sky filled with cotton-ball clouds–the way they used to be before the chemicals. I feel the crisp wind upon my face and watch the daisies smiling happily as they sway back and forth in the sunlight.
And then I open my eyes and realize the children are gone. They’re sitting in front of screens, their eyes passively in a trance, their fingers pushing buttons on electronic devices. Many of them are sick–not just with colds and things that will go away. No, they’re sick a lot, suffering with diseases we didn’t really have to worry about even 30 years ago. I talk to their moms, and they each have their own stories to share, stories of allergies, eczema, asthma, diabetes, autism, ADHD. The list goes on. The experts tell us that they don’t have cures, just medicines to get us through. But I have to ask: is anyone looking for the causes?
What’s happening to our children, America? Why are they so sick?
The CDC says that 1 in 68 currently has autism, 1 in 3 will develop diabetes, and nearly 60% of children with asthma have persistent asthma. I have also found that 1 in 3 have either ADHD, allergies, asthma, or autism. 1 in 3! According to the trends, it looks like all chronic illnesses are still on the rise. What does this mean for our children? What does it mean for you, America?
I have to wonder, have you just distracted us too much? You know, telling us how we can all have it all by chasing the dream you are so well known for. Are we too busy working and transporting our kids from one activity to the next to see what is happening?
Or are your big-name celebrities to blame? There’s always a make-up or a break-up to read about and oftentimes, it can be tempting to dive into our screens to find out more. Are we too busy reading up on the Kardashians that we have no time left to read the ingredients of the foods we feed our children? Are we too busy reading Facebook statuses that we don’t have time to read the inserts to see what is being injected into our babies every other month?
Maybe it’s your shopping malls, the ones built of brick and mortar and the ones we find on our computers. You have some of the best in the world, I have to admit. Are we too busy consuming things that we are ignoring our own basic responsibilities to nourish and nurture our homes? Are we filling our spaces with things instead of memories?
Or is it that we trust you, America? We trust you to protect us, to keep us healthy and well. We feel safe within your borders and feel no need to worry, to fret, to look past what you tell us via your experts. The bad stuff doesn’t happen here. Any talk of it is just a conspiracy theory. You have all of those agencies in place for our own good, right? Shame on us for ever doubting you.
Except I have.
Can I be honest with you? I’ve doubted your experts a lot lately. Not in an ugly way. It’s just that a lot of what they’ve told me doesn’t make much sense to me anymore. When they tell me something is safe, I am no longer sure I can believe them. I’ve come to discover that “safe” is a relative term often awarded to the highest bidder. What the EPA calls a possible carcinogen, the FDA deems safe enough to inject into our children’s bloodstreams as it is a common ingredient used by many vaccine manufacturers. Is formaldehyde “safe”, America? Whom should I believe?
I know that doctors used to promote the use of tobacco, which was once also touted as “safe”. It was a cover-up that lasted for many years because the tobacco companies stood to lose profits if the truth ever got out. Safe just meant that you couldn’t directly link it back to the culprit. It didn’t really mean that it was truly safe.
Is this still happening today? The FDA says that artificial dyes, artificial sweeteners, GMO’s and preservatives are safe. They even say that the preservative thimerosal, which contains mercury, and is still found in some vaccines in “trace amounts” is safe. Is this true?
What about raw milk? The FDA stands firm that this is something that is dangerous to your health. DANGEROUS, they say. How could this be if it has nourished thousands for centuries? I have personally used raw milk to make my infant’s homemade formula and know many who drink it daily with wonderful health benefits. Why do they say it is so harmful when sanitation practices have changed dramatically over the years? Is this because milk processors stand to lose too much money if the public went back to the farm for their milk? Whose telling the truth, America? Can I trust you to tell me?
How is it that what is natural is dangerous but what is fake is “safe”?
With all due respect, I think it’s time we look a little deeper. I think it’s time to look beyond the money and the lobbyists. It’s time to look beyond the state of the economy and the power.
It’s time to look at the little children.
It’s time we see the sweet girl with large brown eyes, carrying her inhaler in her backpack, just in case she can’t catch her breath at recess. The child sitting on her mother’s lap because if she came into contact with someone who had touched an allergen, she could be sent to the hospital fearing for her life. Or what about the little boy, who just can’t sit still in class, who wishes he wouldn’t get in trouble all the time, but he just can’t control himself. It’s time we see the growing child being fed through a feeding tube after another night of no sleep; his mother cries silently, wondering what will become of her boy. It’s time we see the once active toddler, the one who was developing normally until he received his second MMR vaccine. He is now drooling in a corner, staring off into space. He won’t let anyone near him. Do you see him? Do you see them?
I do. And they weigh so heavily on my heart.
It’s time you see them, too, America. It’s time you see the children. It’s time you hear their stories. I know they matter to you. They are you. They are you in 20 years. They will become you and you them. What will you look like then if their health continues to decline?
It’s time to look at what is causing their illnesses, what’s hurting them, what can help them. . .
I have searched high and low. I’ve had my own story to tell, and I’ve heard countless others. Their stories have been interwoven with mine; they’ve become a part of my story. They are a part of our story. There’s a lot of work to be done, I know. But we need you, America. We need you to stand for the children. We need you to look further for their sake. And yours.
Why are they so sick?
Here is what I found.
