Dear Crunchy, Natural Mama,
We work hard, and I mean hard, to live the natural lifestyle. Swimming upstream is never easy, but somehow, we make it work for our family. We know how crazy toxic this world can be, so we do all we can to read those labels and avoid all the bad stuff we can think of: the flame retardant pajamas, the pesticides in produce, the electromagnetic video monitor, and even the conventionally-produced, bleached diapers.
We use cloth, know exactly which essential oils will cure a cough, and grow our own vegetables in terracotta pots or untreated raised beds. We research herbs and homeopathy, know what a SCOBY is, and are permanently attached to our babies their entire first year. We wear them; we love on them, and spend way more than we’d like to admit on stainless steel sippy cups and organic crib sheets and mattresses . . . and food. I won’t even go there.
Natural Mama, I feel you. I really do.
I’ve signed those petitions and fought for my raw milk drop. I’ve even made my baby’s homemade formula when breastfeeding wasn’t possible. I’ve been there. I get it.
But, we’ve missed something. Or at least I did.
There I was making my own kombucha, homemade ice cream, and fermented ketchup, and yet, I was still on the fence about vaccinating my six month old daughter when it came time to decide.
I was afraid . . . and after hearing how “safe and effective” vaccines were and how they saved lives, I began to wonder if I should even go there.
Wasn’t it just a bit of liquid mixed with a simple virus or two? (Or three?)
Weren’t the risks of anything bad happening 1 in a million or something?
Didn’t they say that all of the studies debunked any link to autism?
Just the thought of it all overwhelmed me. I really did not want to go there. I didn’t want to research. I didn’t want to get tangled in the web of “he said, she said.” I really didn’t.
But being a Mom meant that it came with the territory. From sniffles to fevers to snuggles and kisses–vaccinations were just a part of the package. There was no way to avoid dealing with them, and if I knew exactly what was in her organic homemade puree, I sure better know what was in the syringes that were being injected into her body.
And so, I dove in. I started reading books, medical journals, and research compiled by others. I began watching documentaries and attending classes. I began to soak it all up, and what I came to discover was that vaccines did not fit very well into my crunchy, natural lifestyle. As a matter of fact, vaccines were far from natural. Here’s what I thought you might want to know.
Vaccines are not organic.
Actually, they are far from it. When we buy organic foods, we’re paying that extra bit to ensure that we don’t get any chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or artificial agents in our food. We know how harmful those chemicals can be to the body, and we want to make sure to reduce our toxicity load as much as is possible.
Preparing baby’s food from organic sources helps ensure that she’ll have a headstart when it comes to staying healthy. Avoiding artificial flavorings and preservatives helps us avoid neurotoxins and carcinogens in order to maintain a lifestyle of health and wellness.
Vaccines, however, are not organic. Vaccines, by design, contain a number of chemicals, such as formaldehyde, the carcinogen you most likely avoid in your nail polish, along with anti-freeze and artificial preservatives. They have also been found to contain inorganic contaminants, such as lead, nickel, stainless steel, and so much more (1).
These compounds cannot be broken down and can create a chronic inflammatory response. Just think, if ingesting these substances can lead to ill health and disease, what will happen when these very chemicals and metals are injected instead? What happens when you bypass the body’s natural filtration system and go straight into the bloodstream? These are questions you’ll really want to consider.
Vaccines are not vegan.
Many crunchy mamas subscribe to vegetarian or vegan lifestyles. Others eat meat but prefer to avoid conventionally-produced meat, due to unnatural practices and the use of antibiotics. Consuming grass-finished beef or pastured chicken provides more nutrient-dense meals and helps prevent the possibility of food-borne illnesses due to contamination.
What many don’t know is that vaccines also contain components and organ tissue derived from different animals, including pig blood, horse blood, dog kidneys, monkey kidneys, chick embryos, and more (2). These are necessary to culture the viruses, and their actual sources of purity are unknown. It’s also important to note that injecting these foreign proteins can lead to inflammatory responses in the body, which can in turn, lead to food allergies (3).
Sadly, the risk of contamination is also of concern when using the tissue from foreign animals for injection into infants. In the mid-1900’s, the polio vaccine, for example, was contaminated with the SV-40 virus. This virus was found to induce brain cancer, and those who received these lots of vaccines have been shown to still carry the virus and pass it on transgenerationally (4).
If the purity of the animals we consume is of concern, then how much more diligence should we exercise in ensuring the purity of those we inject into our children? If we choose to avoid the consumption of meats, should we still be okay with injecting them? And if we avoid conventionally-produced meats with antibiotics, why is it okay to inject antibiotics into our children via vaccination (2)? All of these are questions we must consider.
Vaccines contain heavy metals.
Many of us natural mamas have traded in our beloved Teflon pans and aluminum cookware in exchange for products that are more inert. We’ve removed our amalgam fillings and exchanged our aluminum deodorants in favor of more natural options. We avoid aluminum food packaging and periodically do heavy metal detoxes. Why?
Because we know how toxic heavy metals can be when allowed to accumulate in the body. We know that aluminum is linked Alzheimer’s and autism. We know that mercury can cause brain fog, migraine headaches, and other neurological disorders. We know better, and so we do better.
What you may not know, however, is that vaccines use heavy metals as preservatives and adjuvants. These heavy metals may include thimerosal, or ethylmercury, which has been shown to accumulate in the brains of primates as inorganic mercury (5).
Adjuvants often include aluminum salts in nanoparticle form, which are difficult for the body to remove and thus able to stay in the body in order to create an antibody response to the injected antigen. This creates an unnatural immune response, which has since been found to be a factor in the increase of allergies and autoimmune disease (6). Injected aluminum is very much different from ingested aluminum, which is processed differently in the body and removed more efficiently.
What you may not know is that the amount of injected aluminum used in vaccines far exceeds what is considered “safe” according to FDA regulations. How do you feel about injecting these metals cumulatively into your one-day old baby? Two-month old? Four-month old? Six-month old? And so forth. Here’s a vaccine calculator that will help you determine the toxicity load in order to help you make a more informed choice.
Vaccines are not at all natural.
If you’re diligent about finding all-natural sources for foods and products, then you probably already avoid genetically-modified organisms. As you already know, GMO’s have been linked to a number of different illnesses and diseases due to the alteration of the genetic code found in certain foods we eat. This engineering alters the way our bodies process the foods as well. What happens, however, when our children have become genetically modified?
Injecting the aborted fetal DNA of infants via vaccination alters our children’s bodies. A recent study found “unacceptably high levels of fetal DNA fragment contaminants” in vaccines containing human fetal cell lines. It has also been found that fetal DNA vaccine contaminants have the potential to cause insertional mutagenesis, leading to a probable causal relationship to autism spectrum disorder prevalence, neurodevelopmental disorders, childhood cancers, and other autoimmune disorders (7, 8).
The more science advances, the more we realize how limited our understanding is of the safety of injecting foreign human and animal DNA into our children. For example, new discoveries have been made on prions, mammalian proteins that “acquire alternative conformations that become self-propagating,” causing many neurodegenerative diseases. Some have considered the possibility of chimerism, which occurs when a body is composed of cells from different zygotes, and others have found retroviruses capable of being reactivated in our children’s bodies (8).
If we follow the CDC recommended vaccine schedule, our infants will have been injected with the human DNA of male and female babies, along with the DNA of monkeys, bovine calf, eggs, and more, all before their first birthday (2). To date, there is no study that has tested this combination of ingredients for safety (9). How do you feel about genetically altering your baby?
I know. It’s a lot to take in. You’ve been told over and over again that vaccines are safe and infectious diseases are deadly. But what if I told you that those deadly disease rates they’ve warned you about all dropped by over 90% in the 1940’s prior to vaccines and antibiotics? Do you know what reduced the mortality rates? Nutrition, sanitation, and clean water–the very things you work so hard to provide for your family (10).
And what if I told you that some infectious childhood diseases actually benefit the body to protect from future chronic conditions? Adults, who had natural measles infections as children, were found to have lower rates of cancer, autoimmune disease, allergies, heart disease and more (11). These are just a few things you’ll want to consider as you begin your research.
At the end of the day, it will be up to you to weigh the benefits and risks of each and every vaccine. It’ll also be up to you to determine if injecting the very toxins you are trying to avoid in your food and products is a good idea.
And if you decide that it’s not, then stand and defend your right to choose. Without each and every one of us doing our part, true natural living may one day be a thing of the past.
