When my son had his first tooth break through the surface, I excitedly made the trip to the grocery store to buy his first toothbrush and toothpaste. With his aunt as a dentist, we wanted to make sure to get a head start and get things going in the right direction.
We went through a couple of flouride-free brands, making sure to keep up with the latest cartoon character or bubble gum flavor. (It’s amazing how quickly a one year old can request for his “Thomas” toothpaste.) It wasn’t until I took a closer look that I realized that a few of the brands I trusted were more than a little “hard to swallow.”
Orajel Toddler Training Toothpaste was one of my son’s favorites until Mama had to step in and read the label. It included ingredients such as methylparaben, which is a known endocrine disrupter and carcinogen, and propylparaben, which causes neurotoxicity and is a skin toxicant . . . and scored a high hazard score on EWG! Now, we all know about the anti-paraben craze and how we have demanded that this stuff be taken out of our shampoos and lotions. Unfortunately, this toothpaste company did not get the message. I’m not sure how you feel about it, but this is definitely not something that I would consider “safe to swallow.”
Colgate offers a fairly good toddler toothpaste except that they add sucralose for flavor, aka Splenda. Just taking a quick look at www.thetruthaboutsplenda.com should be enough to have you second guess this ingredient in a toddler training toothpaste.
So, what did this mean for us? We dumped the hype and cartoon characters when it came to toothpaste, bought the trendy toothbrushes instead, and found some natural solutions we could use for all those brushings my son insisted on.
For those who prefer to purchase their toothpaste, here are some that may be a good natural alternative
for a fresh start to healthy teeth and gums. Beware: any ingredients that are bold-faced scored a moderate hazard score on EWG. When in doubt, search the hazard score on EWG! (Click here for more information.)
