When I first began learning about chemicals and toxic ingredients in everyday products like make up and lotion, I became overwhelmed with what I was learning. The more I learned, the more I realized that almost everything I owned caused “cancer” or some other debilitating symptom or disease.
I remember going through my bathroom cabinets and struggling with throwing away bottle after bottle of sweet-smelling sprays and lotions, make up, and cleansers. I had spent so much money on all of those products. I had trusted that they were safe. Not once had I questioned it. . . but I was wrong not to. They were toxic, and they were ruining my health.
I soon realized that it didn’t matter if I had the cleanest diet, I could still lose my health to the products I applied on my skin and inhaled on a daily basis. And so, I began my search for natural alternatives. I found EWG (Environmental Work Group) and researched company after company for every single product I had to replace. It was exhausting and oftentimes, disappointing as the natural products did not work nearly as well as the chemical versions.
At some point in my search, I began to scour the web for DIY recipes and even came up with a few of my own. The reality, however, was that keeping up with making every single product was not always feasible or sustainable.
Fortunately, I came across The Honest Company. My friend had read and recommended The Honest Life: Living Naturally and True to You by Jessica Alba, who was a co-founder of the company, and after I looked up the research on EWG for the company, I found that it stood on the very principles I was using to rate my natural products. If you click on this link, you can see that all the body products reviewed fell between 0-3 on the hazard rating score by EWG, with the majority of products falling in the low hazard range. This was exciting to me, but the big question remained: Did they work?
I looked up The Honest Company and requested my Free Trial*. Because I strongly believed in the philosophy of the company, I also signed up as an Honest Ambassador (affiliate program) to review one of their products. They sent me a free Honest Shampoo and Body Wash to try in addition to the trial kit. Here are my honest thoughts on the products I have tried so far.
Honest Shampoo & Body Wash: This product scored a 1 on EWG’s rating, which I was thrilled about because I absolutely loved it! It has all natural and organic ingredients and is hypoallergenic as well. It left my hair extra shiny, but not greasy like many of the other natural shampoos I had been using. I also have managed to forgo conditioner for the past month since my hair has been so manageable. (I did notice that they also have a conditioner, so I’ll have to try this one out soon!)
The product doubles as a body wash, and in this respect, it has also worked out well. It lathers wonderfully, which is a big deal for us since we have extremely hard water, so a little bit goes a long way. It is also tear-free, so I can use it on my two-year-old daughter without having to worry about getting it in her eyes. Overall, I was very happy with this product and will definitely be buying it again soon.
Honest Face & Body Lotion: I love that this lotion scored a 0 on the EWG hazard score because it was absolutely perfect! It has a creamy white texture that quickly absorbs into the skin, leaving it smooth and supple. Safe enough for baby and perfectly usable for me!
Honest Healing Balm: The healing balm has a slightly thicker consistency, which is great for extra dry areas or skin conditions, such as eczema. It also has a low hazard score of 1 and works well on sensitive areas.
Honest Wipes: These wipes work just as well as the chemical versions at stores with a low hazard score of 0! They are made of medical grade cloth, are sustainably harvested, and chlorine free! I love that I can use these on my children and soon-to-be-born infant without having to worry about strong-smelling or skin-irritating chemicals.
I have a few more to try but am happy to say that I absolutely love The Honest Company! The individual products work well, and they also have bundle & save options that make it more affordable to stock up on a variety of products. With a true focus on natural products that work and a commitment to sustainable practices and the environment, Honest definitely makes it easier to find great alternatives to everyday products.
